HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DATA AND EQUIPMENT

In light of the "Energy Crisis", your network and computer systems should be protected from "rolling blackouts". Power failures may result in lost data, damaged operating systems, as well as physical hardware damage.

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) attached to a file server only protects your file server, not the individual workstations connected to it. Any files stored on your server that are accessed during a power outage may be lost and/or corrupted via an unprotected workstation. We recommend that your file server and all workstations, as well as peripherals, be protected by an UPS for the following reasons:

1. Your data and system files are protected
2. Power lines are conditioned (sustained low or high voltage causes equipment failure over time)
3. Power spikes or surges are captured
4. You are given time to shut down and exit your systems safely
5. Your computer hardware is protected

Below is an equipment list, which details UPS Hardware appropriate to allow sufficient time to shutdown your systems during a sustained rolling blackout.

Uninterruptible Power Supply Recommendations

EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDED UPS
True File Server w/Redundant Power Supplies APC Smart UPS 3000VA
True File Server w/Single Power Supply APC Smart UPS 1400VA
Heavy Duty Workstation/Light File Server APC Smart UPS 1000VA
Standard Workstation APC Smart UPS 420VA
Large Copiers/Laser Printers APC Smart UPS 1000VA
Small/Medium Laser Printers/Fax Machines (Optional) APC Smart UPS 420VA
Phone System APC Smart UPS 1400VA

The following are network protection diagrams that illustrate the varying level of protection provided.

1. It is especially important to protect your file server. Many important documents are stored on your file server and if it loses power unexpectedly, you could lose valuble information.

2. Wide area network (WAN) devices such as routers, switches and hubs all run on electricity. If these devices lose power, you could lose valuable information passing through your network.

3. High powered and standard workstations depend on electricty and if a current is suddenly cut off or is exhibiting extreme highs and lows, the workstation may be damaged, possibly resulting in a loss of system files or important data.

4. Peripheral devices such as phone systems, copiers and printers all run on power and important documents or phone calls could be lost in the event of a power failure.
